Why must the part number match the engine?

One model can run several different turbos depending on the engine and the power output, and they are not interchangeable. What should I check on a used turbo?

Two things matter most. Spin the compressor wheel and feel for shaft play: a small amount of in-and-out movement is normal, but the wheel should not rub the housing or show heavy side play.
