Used turbocharger: how to buy the right one
Used turbocharger: how to buy the right one
To buy the right used turbocharger, match the part number to your exact engine, then check the shaft for play and the compressor fins for damage. A turbo is a high-value part where the right match and a careful inspection save you a great deal against new, and a genuine used unit from a sound donor goes straight on.
Why must the part number match the engine?
One model can run several different turbos depending on the engine and the power output, and they are not interchangeable. The part number stamped on the turbo body is the reliable match, because the same engine family can carry different turbos for different states of tune. Match the number, or send us your registration and we will confirm the correct unit.
What should I check on a used turbo?
Two things matter most. Spin the compressor wheel and feel for shaft play: a small amount of in-and-out movement is normal, but the wheel should not rub the housing or show heavy side play. Then look at the compressor and turbine fins for chips or bent blades. A good seller shows the wheels clearly in the photos and states whether the unit was checked.
Why did the donor car need breaking?
Ask why the car was broken and the mileage. A turbo from a low-mileage car scrapped for a body or electrical fault is a far better bet than one from a car with engine trouble. The reason for removal tells you a lot about what you are buying.
What should I fit alongside it?
When fitting a used turbo, renew the oil feed pipe, change the oil and filter, and clean the breather, because oil starvation and debris are what kill turbos. Fitting these at the same time is cheap insurance that protects your unit from day one.
