How to check a used engine before you buy

Before buying a used engine, do three things: match the engine code to your exact car, ask the mileage and why the donor was broken, and buy with a clear return policy behind you. An engine is the highest-value part on the car, so the checks matter, but a genuine used unit from a properly run breaker saves you a great deal against a new or reconditioned engine and goes in like the original.

Why is the engine code so important?

The same model can have several different engines depending on the fuel, the capacity and the power output, and they do not all interchange. The model name alone is not enough. Every engine carries a code, stamped on the block, that ties it to the right car. What mileage and history should I ask for?

Ask the mileage of the donor car and why it was broken. An engine from a low-mileage car scrapped for a body or electrical fault is a very different prospect from one pulled because the engine failed. A good breaker knows the donor's story and tells you. Lower mileage and a clean reason for removal are what you want.

What can be checked on a removed engine?

More than people expect. The engine should turn over freely, with no signs of seizure. The block and head should be free of cracks and heavy oil or coolant leaks. A clean oil cap with no mayonnaise under it is a good sign, as the opposite can hint at head gasket trouble. If something cannot be confirmed off the car, an honest seller says so rather than guessing.

Does it come with what I need to fit it?

Check what the engine includes: whether it comes as a bare block, a part-built unit, or complete with ancillaries such as the manifold, injectors and turbo. Clarify before you buy so the fit goes smoothly and you are not chasing a missing part afterwards. It is also worth budgeting for a fresh timing belt or chain, a water pump and an oil and filter change while the engine is out, since fitting those at the same time is cheap insurance.
