Why do cars get broken for parts?
A car is broken when it is worth more in parts than as a whole car. That point arrives after an accident that costs more to repair than the car is worth, an MOT failure with a long list of welding, an engine or gearbox fault on an older car, or simply age and a dwindling market for the complete vehicle. In every one of those cases the rest of the car is usually fine. A rear-ended Ford Kuga still has a perfect front bumper, headlights and engine. The process is more methodical than the word "scrapyard" suggests. Each car is booked in against its registration so every part can be traced back to its donor, then it is drained, stripped, inspected and listed. The table shows the sequence we follow.

A scrapyard is paid by weight. Its business is metal, and parts are a sideline at best, which is why the old image is a muddy field of stacked cars you climb over with your own spanners. A car breaker is paid by parts. Its business depends on removing components without damage, identifying them correctly and describing them honestly, because a wrong or broken part comes straight back. That changes everything about how the car is handled: it is dismantled on a ramp rather than crushed, parts are stored indoors on shelves, and each one carries a part number and a photograph. Yes, when they have been inspected and described properly. A genuine part from a sound donor car is the same component your car was built with, made by the same supplier to the same standard. It has already proved it fits. The job of a good breaker is the inspection and the honest listing: noting a scuff on a mirror, a stone chip on a bumper, a rust spot on a door edge, and saying so in the title. How do I order the right part from a breaker?
Match the manufacturer part number on your old component to the one in the listing, because one model often has several versions of the same part across facelifts, trims and engines. Check the side for handed parts (nearside is the UK passenger side, offside the driver's side) and the paint code for panels, which is on the VIN plate in the door shut or under the bonnet. If you do not have the old part or cannot read the number, send us your registration and a description of the part and we will identify the correct one before you buy. What happens to the rest of the car?
Once the saleable parts are off, what remains is a bare shell, and that goes for metal recycling through licensed routes. Fluids are collected and disposed of correctly, tyres go to tyre recyclers, and the catalytic converter and battery are recovered separately. The result is that a car which would otherwise be crushed whole instead keeps dozens of components in service for years.
