Used VW Golf front bumper: how to buy one that fits
To buy a used VW Golf front bumper that fits, match the generation and facelift first (Mk5 1K 2003 to 2009, Mk6 5K 2008 to 2013, Mk7 5G 2012 to 2017, Mk7.5 2017 to 2020), then the trim, because standard, GTD, GTI and R bumpers are different mouldings, then your four character VW paint code from the boot floor sticker and the sensor and washer layout. A front bumper is a moulded body panel, so a genuine used one fits and looks factory without a new panel and a full respray. Which VW Golf generation do I have?
The front bumper changed with every generation and with the Mk7 facelift, and none interchange. The Mk5 (VW code 1K) ran from 2003 to 2009. The Mk6 (5K) ran from 2008 to 2013 and sits on the same platform as the Mk5, but its bumper, bonnet, wings and lights are all different. The Mk7 (5G) ran from 2012 to 2017 and was facelifted into the Mk7.5 from 2017 to 2020, with a new bumper, grille and lights, so an early and a late Mk7 bumper do not swap. The Mk8 arrived in 2020. The quickest check is your registration, which tells us the exact build date; the VW part number prefix also tells you the generation, as explained below.

Do GTI, GTD and R use a different bumper?
Yes, and on the Golf this matters more than on most cars. The S, Match, SE and GT trims share the standard bumper within a generation. The GTD and GTI share a sportier bumper with a honeycomb lower grille, a deeper splitter and, on the GTI, red detailing in the grille; the GTD uses the same moulding with different inserts. The R has its own bumper with larger intakes and no fog lights, and R-Line cars use a bumper styled like the R but with fog light recesses. A GTI bumper will bolt to a standard car, but it needs the matching grille and brackets and changes the look of the car. Match your own trim for a factory fit and compare the photos with your car before you order.
How do I read the VW part number on a bumper?
VW part numbers are the easiest in the business to decode. The first three characters identify the model (1K0 for the Mk5, 5K0 for the Mk6, 5G0 for the Mk7), the next three identify the group (807 covers bumpers), and the remaining characters identify the exact part and version. The number is moulded into the back of the bumper. If you can read it off your damaged panel, send it to us and we will compare it with the panel on the shelf. How do I get the colour right?
Most Golf front bumpers are colour coded to the body, so the paint code matters as much as the part number. VW puts the code on a sticker in the boot floor or spare wheel well and in the service book. Codes are four characters, for example LC9A Pure White, LB9A Candy White, LA7W Reflex Silver, LC9X Deep Black Pearl and LY3D Tornado Red. A colour matched used bumper goes straight on and saves a respray, which on a bumper is often the biggest part of the bill. If the only bumper available is another colour, a bodyshop can blend it in, but factor that into the price. Do I need the sensor and washer holes?
Match the features your car has. If your Golf has front parking sensors, the bumper needs the four sensor holes in the right positions and ideally the holders still fitted behind them. If your car has no front sensors, buy a plain bumper, because a sensor bumper means filling holes or leaving them visible. Cars with xenon or LED headlights have washer jet apertures in the bumper, and Mk7 cars with adaptive cruise control have a radar module behind the lower grille.
